Questions and tips about water heaters

There are times when knowledge is more valuable than gold. This is one of those times. Please check out our tips and questions for valuable information.

When do I repair rather than replace my water heater?

It depends upon the age, overall condition, and problem with the current water heater. If the water heater is less then 8 years old, and in good condition, it is possible it would be worth fixing depending on the current problem. After a thorough evaluation, Prestige Plumbing can determine whether to recommend that it be replaced or repaired. Call Prestige Plumbing & Backflow Services, your local Deland Plumber.

Why does my hot water only last half the time?

This is a very common problem with water heaters. The problem is in the bottom electronics. A water heater has two elements, top(master) and bottom (slave). The bottom element will not turn on until the top element reaches temperature. After the top element reaches temperature, the bottomelement should heat the bottom of the the tank. If the bottom electronics are faulty, you will only have half a tank of hot water (the top half). Call Prestige Plumbing & Backflow Services, your local Deland Plumber to determine if this is your situation.

Why do I have no hot water?

First, check the electrical breakers. Next, check the reset button on the top thermostat. If neither of these steps solve the problem, then you have a bad thermostat or bad top element. A water heater has top and bottom electronics. The top is the master and the bottom is the slave. If the master (top) never reaches temperature then it will never supply power to the bottom element. Call Prestige Plumbing & Backflow Services, your local Deland Plumber to determine if this is your situation..

Why is there water on the floor around the water heater?

The elements may have shorted and thus, started leaking. Remove the cover plates, and check the elements for leaks. If you see no leaks, then the tank is leaking. Call Prestige Plumbing & Backflow Services, your local Deland Plumber to replace the water heater.

Why is water running out of the t&P valve(the valve on top of your water heater)?

This is a serious problem. The water heater is not turning off and thus, is boiling water. The t&P (temperature-pressure) valve is alerting you to know there is a problem. Call Prestige Plumbing & Backflow Services, your local Deland Plumber to determine if this is your situation.
